Made in Kaunas
In the former weaving mill Drobe in Kaunas Dutch artist Guda Koster has created a site-specific work for the Kaunas Biennial. For this large installation she used textiles -made in Kaunas- in various striped patterns to cover numerous cubes placed side by side and op top of each other. Here and there pairs of arms or legs, wearing cheap white sneakers, covered in striped patterns, pop out of the cubes. Clothing, fashion, textiles and mannequins are recurring ingredients in Kosters sculptures photo’s and installations. She appears to be balancing between a formal minimalistic sculptors attitude and a more dramatic approach. Made in Kaunas refers to the past of the exhibition space and suggests a giant machine swallowing or incorporating human parts.
