OPGEMERKT!
‘Opgemerkt’ is a social art project by Guda Koster in the Rosmolenbuurt in
Zaandam, commissioned by the city of Zaandam. The work was based on memories and stories of inhabitants of the neighbourhood that will be restructured and demolished in the next fifteen years.
The Rosmolenbuurt was built in the early twentieth century and the neighbourhood has become obsolete. For many inhabitants the partial demolishing and restructuring of the neighbourhood is an intense invent.
Old people move away, familiar places disappear and new inhabitants, buildings and houses take their place.
Koster asked the inhabitants for stories from the past hundred years. Inhabitants brought her old photographs, drawings and told her stories.
Koster then made a traditional picture in embroidery on cloth depicting a number of these stories. These four embroidered pictures were transferred into digital images and prints on large metal billboards. The huge and colourful billboards were placed in the neighbourhood.
